A letter about bikes-as-traffic to the Baltimore Sun

Here's an accurate and succinct a description of what many cycling advocates think about riding in traffic. The party line, you could call it. Parts of it seem to make sense. Other parts make one wonder what universe these folks inhabit. See for yourself....

I pretty much agree with the fellow's view. If the cops were to enforce "distracted driving" along with unsafe moves that cyclists are the potential victims of every day, no further laws would be needed. Sadly a change in mindset is the real problem. Until someone on a bicycle is viewed as a legitimate road user by the cops (all too rare) nothing much will change in the USA.

That was a bit all over the place. Keeping it simple for the average driver is probably best, as in the 3 foot rule. There could definitely be some stronger enforcement, but pointing out how cars speed, etc. isn't likely to influence the average driver.

WRT distracted drivers, my greatest fear these days is not the angry driver, he's at least paying attention to me, it's the inexperienced teenager writing a text while driving into the sun.

I agree with the op-ed piece, but what are the chances of us enforcing the current laws when, as the writer says, every time we do try to enforce the laws, the scofflaws scream and the politicians run like scared rabbits?

We just killed another bicyclist in nearby Albuquerque. Somehow a motorist "lost control" of her car, careened across three lanes of traffic, across a berm, through a fence, and killed a cyclist riding on a bike path. As the cyclists in Albuquerque are asking right now, "WTF?"
