Provocative piece from Bicycling abt Jonathan Boyer

If you've been riding more than 10 or 15 years and you paid any attention at all to bicycle racing, you know who Jonathan (Jock) Boyer is and what he achieved in cycling. And you know about the scandal and jail term. You probably don't know much else. Steve Friedman, the writer of this fine piece from Bicycling Online, aches to understand. I feel sure you will too.

Thanks for posting that link. I never heard about all the Moyer drama. He was definitely a hero of mine back in the early '80s and from time to time wondered what ever happened to him.

Boy, certainly not light reading at the end of the day. One could ask all sorts of questions involving the questions raised by the article, and maybe answer a few. Bottom line is this guy needs to know he is not a pariah, he made maybe understandable but wrong choices once, unlike the rest of us who are squeaky clean. I would like to say to him, keep up the good work, cut yourself a bit of slack, it is a long trip and there are many miles to go yet.

He made some foolish choices, as we all do . . . They were as dumb as some of the pro riders' decisions to dope. At least he fessed up which is generally more than the dopers do. He paid the price but seems to keep paying it - doesn't seem quite at peace. His life now seems exemplary and perhaps he will find peace in his new life. Too bad he had to go to live on another continent to avoid the stigma of his conviction.

I posted a comment on this article on my own blog, and got a mixed response.
