Lance, 39, says he feels 39

And in this interview, from VeloNews in the last days before the Tour of California, Armstrong says that the guys he's racing now are stronger than the guys he raced then. Remarkably frank chat with a frankly worried man....

Sooner or later its time to gain some weight, open a beer, and move on. I suspect this year or the next for Tex. Even the ageless wonder Joop Zoetemelk was slowing down at 39.

So I'm looking forward to this tour as much as a story of Big Tex's human evolution as well as who wins the hammerfest.

A sure sign of age is when the "the competition is much tougher than before" quotes start coming. Greg LeMond said much the same thing before he retired. He's had a great career, it's time for BigTex to hang up the wheels and get serious about his cancer charity work -- he might even spend some time with his wives and kids!

Frankly, LA and Co. have some backtracking to do, after their campaign impuning the character/ability/etc. of Contador. Suspect this is the beginning of some repositioning prior to the TdF to adjust expectations commensurate with performance.
