Top ten facts about the annual Sturgis motorsickle rally

Here's the link. I just rode through Sturgis, a cute, prosperous Black Hills town nothing like its scruffy, drunk-biker-hangout reputation. It's a biker destination all through the nice weather months, not only at rally time.

Seldom (in Sturgis) is heard a discouraging word, 'cause you can't hear sh-t over the exhaust noise.

This thing has been corporatized just like so many other, originally fun things in the world. Now it's all about making big bucks from the Harley enthusiast, especially the fake ones who jumped on the fad in the last few years. Eventually the newbies will get interested in some other fad activity and the whole deal will shrink back to something like it once was...Harley sales are already tanking with workers being laid off. Did anyone think this was more than simply a fad?

I haven't ridden a motorcycle in years, and my take on it is pretty much the same as it was in 1980 -- the electric started is the work of the Devil. In the days of the kickstarter, it was pretty easy to separate the riders from the posers: If you ain't big enough to start it, you ain't big enough to ride it. It took special skills to start the big singles like the BSA Victor or the Matchless 500.
