Two columnists, two papers, two opinions

First, here's a link to an IndyStar (Indianapolis Star Online) business section piece about the well attended Handbuild Bicycle Show there a week or so ago. Indy, as you'll read, does not think of itself as a bike-friendly town, especially compared to truly stellar bike cities like, say SEATTLE.

Indy is my hometown, and having ridden in cars and on my motorcycle there in recent years and seen the lovely, narrowish suburban streets with no shoulders, I'd have to agree. I'd like to be proven wrong; I haven't given up on Indy. I want to ride that Monon trail out of Broadripple.

This link takes you to an article from the West Seattle Herald online. Ostensibly about cycling's place in our culture and perhaps that of some country like France, the piece focuses on political obstructionist tactics among Seattle's bicycle-hating barbarians. Imagine resisting the extension of the Burke-Gilman Trail. Creeps and cretins....

Two good pieces, no agreement about good bike towns. Is that a surprise....?

The most bike friendly place that I ever lived in was Los Angeles. For the record, I've lived in San Francisco, Marin County, Los Angeles, Berkeley, Oakland and Seattle. LA has wide streets, mostly flat terrain except when you want to climb and plenty of alternate streets if the main ones-the wide ones-put you off. Plus lots of good shops and if you like old bikes there's a well developed community for you. Certainly better than the "bike friendly" East Bay where the close shave is a daily fact of life.

Why doesn't the alt-trans movement start painting anti-bike/light rail/bus/sidewalk crusaders such as certain righty-wing news folk and politicians, as traitors. Yes, traitors. They're encouraging people to burn more gasoline. Why don't "we" call "them" on their advocacy for the transportation mode--private cars--that gives direct financial backing to the same people that fund terrorism, the Iraqi insurgency, the Afghani Taliban, etc.? Patriots pedal--traitors drive. Time to call them the Saudi-loving, Bin Laden financing treasonous slime that they really are.

Philcycles, as a former LA resident I can't call it the very best cycling city I've lived in, but it's damned good. It's a huge area, but most parts of it have a very well-developed street grid that connects well within large areas. AS for shops--makes me want to burn a candle on the sidewalk in front of Harding's old storefront the next time I visit!
